The cause of Hayden Panettiere’s death has been confirmed following the actress’s sudden passing at the age of 36.
Panettiere, best known for her roles as Claire Bennet in Heroes, Juliette Barnes in Nashville and Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise, died on August 16 after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.
According to the coroner’s findings, her death was caused by the toxic effects of several substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Her death has been officially classified as an accident.
The autopsy found no evidence of trauma that contributed to her death, while authorities have also reported no initial indication of foul play.
Panettiere had remained a familiar face in television and film for more than two decades, beginning her career as a child actress before becoming internationally recognised for Heroes. She later earned further attention for Nashville and returned to the Scream franchise in 2022’s Scream.
Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow actors, with many remembering her work across television and film.

This is very heartbreaking news. Hayden Panettiere was a talented fellow. I don’t really know what is wrong with the younger generation with hard drugs. It’s killing a lot of them everyday. I think there should be a lot of sensitisation on drug abuse to combat things like this
I was shocked when I first heard about Hayden Panettiere’s death. She was so young and still had so much of her life left to live.
I do understand that she went through a lot and struggled a great deal in life.
My thoughts are very much with her friends and family at this time.
